End of Class Reflections
Dear Student,
Before throwing yourself into English 1CH, let me set the stage for your journey ahead—a path that will transform how you relate to writing, media, and personal growth. What you are about to experience is much more than another boring English class but, rather, a chance for personal growth.
As you begin, be prepared to deconstruct your view of news and media. You will soon learn that news is not simply facts but a complex combination of perspectives, truths, and potential biases. The course will challenge you to become a more discerning reader, teaching you the importance of seeking diverse sources and understanding the nuanced narratives that shape our understanding of the world.
You will learn the power of rhetorical analysis. You are going to discover the anatomy of an argument: how to cut up communications with surgical precision, explore logical, emotional, and ethical appeals (and when they are used incorrectly: fallacies); understand the structure of arguments; and become adept at identifying rhetorical strategies. The SOAPSTone technique will become immeasurably valuable as you learn to break down texts for their deeper meanings in ways you never thought possible.
Your interviewing and writing will be transformed. You will learn that great interviews take thoughtful preparation, research, and interpersonal skills just like many things in life. With simple yet powerful techniques, you can create meaningful dialogues, and turn interviews into rich, insightful exchanges.
Most importantly, you'll develop a skill that might surprise you the most: meaningful self-reflection. I can tell what you're thinking—and yes, I am talking directly to your current skepticism. Believe it or not, you will even (ironically) self-reflect that “Normally, I feel like peer review is mostly useless, but this one definitely helped improve my sense as a reader and writer.” You will learn that reflection is not criticism but growth—through carefully guided peer reviews and process portfolios. You learn not to be defensive but open to feedback, and to recognize what at first seemed a daunting task as a powerful means to personal and academic growth.
As you close this letter, note that this course involves even more than writing and communicative skills; it includes development, critical thinking, understanding at a deeper level, and empathy towards the real events happening around you. The following you will learn: analyzing vast information, rhetorical concepts, interview skills, and most importantly, how to learn. These tools will guide you long after this class is completed.
Embrace the journey ahead. You'll thank yourself for it.
Sincerely,
Your Future Self
In this class, we've nurtured a garden: each skill and insight is a seed, growing together into a thriving landscape of understanding, cultivated with care and reflection.
